515 euros per month: Bundestag decides minimum wage for trainees

2019-10-24T12:46:40.886Z

Tens of thousands of trainees will be better paid in the future: From next year, they will receive at least 515 euros per month. But what the Bundestag has decided is not enough for critics.

In the coming year it starts: Apprentices in the first year of apprenticeship should get at least 515 euros a month for their work in companies. That's what the Bundestag decided on Thursday.

The amount will be gradually increased in subsequent years to up to 620 euros per month in the first year of apprenticeship. Even in the second and third year of training, there is more: In 2024, the minimum wage for apprentices should increase automatically with the development of apprentice salaries. In the future, exceptions will only be possible if employers and trade unions have their own agreements for individual sectors.

The law also provides for the introduction of new titles for vocational training in order to ensure the international competitiveness of VET. In the future, there will be the following training qualifications:

  • "Certified Career Specialist"
  • "Bachelor Professional"
  • "Master Professional"

In addition, even more apprentices should be able to take part-time training.

Dual training as a German trademark

With its law, the federal government wants to make vocational training more attractive and reduce drop-out rates in training. The Federal Council still has to agree to the reform.

Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) said in the Bundestag, the dual training is next to "Made in Germany" a trademark of Germany. But success was not a matter of course, she said with reference to vacancies.

The planned minimum compensation could benefit around 115,000 young people. According to the Federal Employment Agency, so many apprentices earned less than € 500 a month at the end of 2017 - many of them even less than € 400. In the East and in certain occupations, for example as a hairdresser, apprentices have so far received very little money.

The union IG BAU welcomed the minimum wage - 515 euros in the first year of training was still "clearly too little". Here, the legislature must refill.

Praise from the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) for the new designation of further education certificates: The designations are a "strong signal for the equality of vocational and academic education". The craft industry also spoke of "attractive and internationally comprehensible advanced training designations".

On the other hand, the trade association warned against "confusion" when introducing the new designations as well as additional costs for the companies due to exemptions of all apprentices on vocational school days. An additional burden is also threatened by the planned paid exemptions from examiners.
