Syria and Iran signed in Tehran today a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing and stabilizing the electricity system in Syria and self-reliance and the localization of technology and the manufacture of electrical equipment in Syria.
The memorandum of understanding signed on behalf of the Syrian side by the Minister of Electricity Mohammad Zuhair Kharboutly and on the Iranian side by the Minister of Energy Dr. Reda Erdakianian work to rebuild the electricity system in Syria and the localization of the electrical equipment industry in it also includes the establishment of power plants and transmission and distribution networks and work to rebuild and reduce damage In the electricity distribution network in the fields of engineering, operation and customer services.
The Memorandum of Understanding provides for joint investment and the exchange of technical information for the construction of types of power plants and renewable energy, as well as the reconstruction, rehabilitation and upgrading of power plants, operation and maintenance, securing spare parts for plants, repairing electrical transformers and producing electrical products and devices, giving priority to the production of smart equipment, transformers and cables.
The memorandum also included the work to create a tripartite electrical link between Syria, Iran and Iraq, through a joint partnership that studies and technical preparations necessary.
The MoU also included a comprehensive training plan, including short and long-term training courses to enhance the performance and expertise of cadres in the electrical sector and conduct joint research projects.
In a statement following the signing, the two ministers stressed the serious determination of both sides to implement the Memorandum of Understanding with the required speed and continuous work for the development and localization of the technology and electrical equipment industry in order to restore the electrical system in Syria to what it was before the crisis and achieve self-sufficiency.
The signing ceremony was attended by Syrian Ambassador in Tehran Dr. Adnan Mahmoud and Tehran Ambassador in Damascus Jawad Turk Abadi.
