Higher prices, fewer offers: Cheap tickets in descent

2019-11-05T13:28:59.427Z

The offer of low-cost flights was lower last summer than in the previous year. This was the result of a study by the German Aerospace Center.

Bargain hunters found it harder to find cheap flights in the summer. Cheap flights in Germany were offered less frequently and have become more expensive at the same time. The range of flights had fallen compared to the same period last year by one percent, reported the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

A typical week in July was examined with 6680 offered flights. The result of the analysis: In domestic traffic, as well as to Spain and Great Britain, the airlines offered fewer flights. There were some additional connections to Italy.

After trial purchases on a deadline in October, the average price of a plane ticket without any extras have increased, reported the DLR. Reason should be the more expensive kerosene.

Among the large providers, the range of average prices ranging from 44.10 euros at the Hungarian airline Wizz about 55 euros for Easyjet and Ryanair up to 111.27 euros, which were due on average for a ticket at the Lufthansa company Eurowings. A year ago, the range had been 38 to 100 euros.

Tips: How to make you feel greener

The decline in supply in the fiercely competitive German market is by no means typical of what is happening in Europe. With more than 67,000 launches in a typical week, supply across the continent grew by four percent, especially with additional flights to Italy and Greece.

Extremely cheap connections in the review

The market leader Ryanair / Lauda and the industry-wide Easyjet expanded their flight plans. The decline in Germany is explained by particularly strong capacity expansions following the bankruptcy of Air Berlin, which led to a significant oversupply in 2018.

With a share of 47 percent of the flights offered, the Lufthansa subsidiary was once again the largest provider on the German market. The ticket prices vary greatly depending on the time limit of the advance booking.

Occasionally, the DLR test buyers at Ryanair and Wizz also found the politically controversial lowest prices of € 9.99 for connections such as Bremen-London and Dortmund-Budapest in three months from the booking. Since flies damage the climate, extremely cheap connections have recently come under greater scrutiny.

The number of routes offered in the summer from Germany increased by 14 to 940. Especially the Hungarian Wizz put on new connections from Dortmund. Easyjet grew mainly at the Berlin airport.

The airlines are still deliberately avoiding their offers: only one company is active on almost nine out of ten connections. Real competition from more than two low-cost airlines prevailed only on ten routes, preferably to Mallorca and Barcelona.
