48-hour strike by UFO: Lufthansa wants arbitration with flight attendants

Lufthansa wants to solve the collective bargaining dispute with the flight attendants by arbitration. The airline had considered the union UFO as not authorized to represent.

The Lufthansa is ready to mediate in dispute with the cabin crew union UFO. The company wants to start talks with all three unions of the cabin, said CEO Carsten Spohr. "This explicitly includes discussions with the UFO again - with the aim of arranging the arbitration offered yesterday by the UFO in the interest of our customers and employees."

The talks between UFO and Lufthansa have been going on for months. In the morning, the union started a strike that was supposed to result in a total of 1300 flights by Friday midnight, and many flights were canceled in the morning. About 180,000 customers could be affected.

The conflict is about higher expenses and allowances, as well as better access for seasonal workers to regular employment. Behind the demands, however, is the question raised by the Group, whether UFO can enforce any collective agreements for the approximately 21,000 Lufthansa flight attendants.

Interim injunctions against UFO strike rejected

After an internal dispute, UFO has a new board in office, which the general assembly confirmed in office. Lufthansa is of the opinion that the existing board is not authorized to represent. The company is examining the inclusion of cabin crew bargaining with the service union Ver.di.

Lufthansa had failed on Wednesday in two courts with the attempt to stop the strike by legal means. Both the Frankfurt Labor Court and the Hessian State Labor Court rejected a restraining order against the UFO strike.

According to the judges, the collective agreements have been terminated correctly, the strike decision is valid. Attacks by the Lufthansa lawyers against the short-term change in labor union rules of the union rejected them also. Here it concerns internal regulations of the UFO without external effect.

The union UFO has announced an extension of the industrial action to up to four further airlines with German collective bargaining law. This could particularly affect Eurowings flights.
