Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier wants to abolish the solidarity surcharge from 2020 onwards for all citizens and companies. This changes his previous schedule.
Altmaier proposes a free allowance in order to allow all taxpayers to benefit from a gradual elimination of the soli. That said the CDU politician of the "Rheinische Post".
The Minister of Economic Affairs is on the solos on a confrontation with plans of Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD), but the Cabinet has already decided. However, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat still have to vote on the abolition.
According to the Cabinet decision, the solos for 90 percent of taxpayers will be canceled, another 6.5 percent should pay him only partially from 2021 - the higher the income, the more.
Altmaier had presented in August a counter-proposal to the Scholz concept, with the solos gradually degraded and to 2026 complete phased out. Start should therefore be 2021, but now Altmaier wants to start in 2020.
The Minister had expressed constitutional concerns over the Scholz draft and hopes for changes in the parliamentary process. His colleague Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer had demanded an even faster end of the soli a short time later.
The SPD, however, is against the Union's demand for a complete eradication of the Soli. She wants that higher earners continue to pay the levy.
