Miles & More: In the future, Lufthansa will reward only extremely loyal customers

2019-11-11T16:49:51.634Z

Only a truly loyal customer can become an official frequent flyer of Lufthansa. Europe's largest airline is implementing its customer program.

The Lufthansa Group plans to redesign its frequent flyer program Miles & More in just over a year. This has been announced for some time, now the first customers are informed. The company wants to go public on Tuesday. Benefits such as lounge access or preferred boarding are associated with frequent flyer status.

From January 2021, Europe's largest airline will change the logic with which to achieve frequent flyer status. This says Lufthansa spokeswoman Sandra force the SPIEGEL. Then those customers who are truly loyal to the company would be rewarded. Also, after many conversations with frequent flyers, the calculation system would be simplified. The "Handelsblatt" first reported changes. The system of so-called award miles, with which customers can buy tickets or goods, remains unchanged

For some time now, the name "Miles & More" has not been correct anymore: Since March 2018, the loyalty program does not count the flown distance but the ticket price. In order to achieve the frequent flyer status from 2021 onwards, it will no longer be "miles" but "points". These result from the combination of travel class (economy, premium economy, business or first-class ticket) and traffic area (short or long haul), says Kraft. The spokeswoman cites as examples of the "simplified system":

  • Anyone flying in the economy class within Europe receives five points - no matter on which route,
  • in the business class within Europe : ten points.
  • If you book a long-distance ticket for a USA flight in Economy , you'll get 15 points,
  • in first class on the long haul : 70 points.

To achieve a frequent flyer status, a minimum number of points is required:

  • A "Frequent Traveler" must have achieved at least 160 points,
  • a "senator" 480 points and
  • a "HON Circle Member" 1500 points.

The first catch: Previously counted each flight in the 27 members of the Star Alliance on the frequent flyer account. In the future, half of the status points will have to be achieved through bookings made with airlines of the Lufthansa Group - Lufthansa, Swiss, AUA, Brussels Airlines or Eurowings, says spokeswoman Kraft. The other half can still be collected via flights with alliance partners. HON Circle Members, however, must - as before - hold exclusively to Lufthansa companies.

And there is a second catch. In the future, the status achieved will no longer be valid for at least two years, but for at least one year - more precisely, until February of the year after the year after reaching the required number of points, says Kraft. "Senator", for example, a customer can call so also best 26 months.

The airline still holds a candy for extremely loyal customers. Frequent travelers and senators could fly their title for life, says Kraft. However, they have to collect 7500 or 10,000 points from the core airlines within ten years. That, however, is a lot of lifetime above the clouds.
