Tariff conflict: Lufthansa and union Ufo count on long mediation

2019-11-14T16:28:53.576Z

After the two-day strike, Lufthansa and the Ufo cabin union are preparing for difficult talks. The most urgent problem: There are no suitable mediators.

The Lufthansa Group is facing complicated mediation for the approximately 21,000 flight attendants of the core company. The company and the union UFO avoided at a joint press conference to call specific deadlines or deadlines for the agreed procedure.

Both sides are currently looking for suitable mediator personalities. These are usually experienced lawyers or politicians. The search is difficult, said UFO chief Nicoley Baublies in view of the protracted conflict: "We scared a few people in advance. It's not that the conciliators are queuing up with us."

This had been preceded by months of legal disputes, warning strikes and, most recently, a two-day outage of flight attendants, which resulted in 1500 Lufthansa flights being canceled last week.

Termination of the UFO chief will be heard in court

"We accept the UFO as a union," said the Lufthansa Labor Director Bettina Volkens. She was the cabin crew and the majority union before the Ver.di. The most important milestone has already been reached by the Ufo because the group has stopped the so-called status procedure, with which the Ufo should be denied the union property.

Meanwhile, the personal termination of Baublies by Lufthansa has not yet been withdrawn. There are still details to clarify, said Volkens. According to Ufo, the Lufthansa attorney had withdrawn a settlement with Baublies in the morning at a trial before the Frankfurt Labor Court.

For the time being no new strikes of the UFO flight attendants

During the conciliation procedure, a comprehensive peace obligation applies, so that renewed strikes of the UFO flight attendants are excluded until further notice. "But no trades may be closed past the UFO," said UFO vice-president Daniel Flohr. One had therefore reclaimed a special right of termination for this case.

Flohr called further concrete improvements for the employees who had already been arranged. Every cabin employee will receive a special payment of 1500 Euro this year. Previously, a "winter allowance" for the seasonal flight attendants had already been agreed with Ver.di and Ufo to alleviate their financial bottlenecks in the winter months.
