Andenes on the northern Norwegian island of Andøya is one of the world's best spots for whale watching. If you drive from here for a boat safari on the icy northern sea, sees sperm whales and orcas, with a little luck also pilot whales, minke whales, humpback whales or dolphins.
Now another whale is making a name for itself in Andenes: "The Whale" - the new adventure and knowledge center, which will open in 2022 directly on the coast near the lighthouse.

"The Whale" in Norway: surfacedThe design of the Danish architectural firm Dorte Mandrup convinced the jury in the competition. Impressively "The Whale" rises from the rugged rocks. If you enter the curved, stone roof of the approximately 4500 square meter building, you can look far out onto the Atlantic Ocean. Above: the midnight sun or the bright northern sky. Inside, "The Whale" offers exhibition space, space for a shop, restaurants and offices.
Around 20 million euros will cost the construction of the architectural attraction. After Andenes come annually about 50,000 visitors, "The Whale" is to attract even more tourists to northern Norway.
Andøya is the northernmost island of Vesterålen. Only a few kilometers off Andenes, the seabed drops steeply to over 1000 meters.
