Consumers in Germany must adjust to significantly rising electricity prices in 2020. At the turn of the year, 419 local primary utilities announced that they would raise their prices by an average of 5.5 percent. This emerges from the new consumer atlas of the comparison portal Verivox, which is the SPIEGEL. Other utilities are likely to follow price increases over the course of the year. Not a single one has announced so far to lower prices.
In Germany, around 11.2 million households draw electricity from the often comparatively expensive basic supply. The primary provider is the energy company that supplies the majority of household customers in a network area. Customers who do not actively switch providers are always in the basic service.
The planned increases vary greatly from neighborhood to neighborhood.
- The postal code with the largest increase is in Hesse Herborn . Anyone who is supplied with the terms of the universal service must pay 15 percent more for electricity in the coming year.
- Electricity prices in Stemwede in North Rhine-Westphalia rise by 13.5 percent.
- In Bremerhaven, Niedereschach, Königsfeld, Rottweil, Deisslingen, Unterrotenstein, Wildenstein, Dunningen, Zimmer, Dietlingen, Eschbronn and Budenheim , electricity price increases of at least twelve percent have been announced.
