Lufthansa is planning a new corporate brand for its low-cost long-distance rail transport. According to a report of the "Wirtschaftswoche" she is to head for destinations in the Caribbean and in the USA from 2020 onwards. So far, they have been operated under the low-cost brand Eurowings - but the airline will retire from the long-haul business in the future.
As the new budget airline is called, is apparently still unclear. "A decision which name it is, but has not yet fallen," said a Lufthansa spokesman for the magazine.
The cheap subsidiary is to start mainly from large Lufthansa hubs: A majority of the long-haul flights is shifted according to the "Wirtschaftswoche" from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt and Munich.
Reason for the conversion are the continuing losses of routes overseas. Since October, the parent company has gradually taken responsibility for the intercontinental connections.
Already in 2015 at the start of long-haul flights with Eurowings, there had been problems. At that time, every third flight was delayed. This was shown by figures from the service provider Fairplane, which specializes in the enforcement of air passenger rights.
The reasons given for the lack of punctuality were short-term sick leave, unscheduled repairs and strong winds over the Atlantic. According to Fairplane, the main problem was that Eurowings used too few machines and crews.
