Houses of the Year: Brick can be so beautiful

Marc Hehn and Christian Pohl were predestined for this new building in Münster. The architects are familiar with brick. One of them in the style of early modernity planned family home in the Münster Spirit Quarter in 2011 took third place at the Fritz Höger Prize for brick architecture. Although the material determines the entire, monolithic form of the building, it is applied to the craftsmanship quality ", wrote the jury at the time.

This applies equally to this family home in Buddenstraße in Münster. It is within sight of the Buddenturm. Everything in the vicinity of the 1150 built as a defense tower landmark may be built only in a certain way. So it had to be brick, and at some point, the builders were sure that it must be Marc Hehn and Christian Pohl, who operate since 2008 as hehnpohl architects.

But before the construction came dismantling. Because the property was not free, here was another house. And before the municipal monuments authority gave the green light for the demolition, she wanted to know what the alternative should be. The design committee of the city had also a say in the matter. But then the way was clear for the back and subsequent new construction.

Today, there is a four-storey brick house whose façade has opened three times to the street: the copper-clad entrance and the garage entrance. Above this, the architects opened the wall for a corner glazing in front of which there is a bench. On the second floor, Hehn and Pohl did not cut as deeply into the façade as on the floor below, but here too a beautiful vantage point was created.

When you enter the house, on the right hand side you will go upstairs. The further up you get, the brighter it gets, because skylights are embedded in gables and eaves. Behind the entrance area is a multi-function room, behind it goes into the courtyard. The exposed concrete staircase leads up to the living and dining area with adjoining roof terrace. The remaining floors are reserved for the bedroom and study as well as other living space.
