Ranking by tourist density: So full is your city travel destination

2019-12-06T12:06:59.696Z

In Barcelona the resentment about too many tourists is great. But in many cities around the world, the proportion of visitors to residents is much higher - for example in Miami or Munich. A ranking.

Whether Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona or Lisbon - in many cities there is growing displeasure with the rush of tourists. And even the visitors themselves do not appreciate it when they have to spend hours in front of the main attractions of their holiday destination in queues.

The feeling of overcrowding, the so-called overtourism, often does not necessarily have anything to do with the actual number of local travelers. Officially, Esta, a visa application processing company, has made a simple calculation - and determined a tourist density. With figures including the UN and Euromonitor results in a ratio of tourists per 100 inhabitants. From this Esta has created a ranking for 47 cities surveyed.

Ranking: Tourist density in popular cities

And it turns out that neither Barcelona nor Lisbon nor Porto are the most complete, but Miami, Las Vegas and Dubai. In the US city of Miami in Florida, 500,000 inhabitants annually encounter 8.1 million tourists. In Las Vegas, there are 6.6 million visitors to 700,000 inhabitants and 16.7 million to Dubai, or 2.8 million Emiratis.

Barcelona ranks 24th in this ranking (121 tourists per 100 inhabitants per year). But above that, German cities like Munich are in 11th place (265 to 100) and Berlin is in 18th place (162 to 100). Edinburgh (4), Dublin (5) and Vienna (8) are also major European cities that are amazingly high in the ranking.

Less astonishing is that such megapolias as Beijing, Mexico City and São Paulo end up in this evaluation on the last places. Its population is more than 20 million - as the two to four million visitors lose almost every year.

The feeling of "too many tourists" probably has little to do with the actual number. But rather with the conurbation within a few summer months and in a few places in the city - and also with the consequences for the inhabitants such as lack of housing, rising rents and prices.
