Zurich Insurance wants to reimburse 17.5 percent of its claims to customers of insolvent tour operator Thomas Cook. The total damage amounts to 287.4 million euros including return transport. The Zurich Group Germany could refund the tourists who could not start their journey, but only 50.4 million euros. This was announced by the company in Cologne.
Nearly 60 million euros have already flowed for the return transport of the 140,000 Thomas Cook vacationers. The remainder of the loss was accounted for by down payments made by customers on trips that were canceled due to bankruptcy.
Liability sum of 110 million euros
Of these amounts, the prevented tourists get only 17.5 percent, so 50.4 million euros, refunded by Zurich, because the mandatory protection of customers is capped at 110 million euros per year. However, the Federal Government has agreed to compensate for the difference.
Thomas Cook GmbH filed for bankruptcy on 25th September. 140,000 vacationers were surprised by this on vacation. "Far more" their booked and paid travel could no longer compete, said the insurance. They were able to register their claims with the service provider Kaera.
Zurich board member Horst Nussbaumer announced that the insurance would begin processing claims in the coming days. This will take several weeks.
