For years ExxonMobil maintained a strange relationship to climate change. For years, one remained silent about the phenomenon and left the public in a false belief. But information relevant to the stock price was not withheld, a New York court ruled in a sensational investor case.
In the dispute over alleged misstatement of climate change, the largest US oil company ExxonMobil was acquitted. Judge Barry Ostrager, according to his judgment, did not see sufficient evidence that the company was misleading investors about business risks as a result of stricter regulation due to global warming.
The New York Attorney General's office, which accused the oil company of misleading investors after years of investigation, had filed a lawsuit. New York's Attorney Letitia James remained undeterred despite the verdict. Her office said, "Through the process, we have shown that Exxon has made fundamentally false, misleading and confusing presentations."
Exxon criticizes waste of tax money through lawsuits
Exxon had rejected the allegations of the prosecutor from the beginning as unfounded and was now confirmed by the decision of the judge. "We provided our investors with accurate information about the risks of climate change," the corporation announced. In addition, Exxon criticized that processes like this would "waste millions on taxpayer money."
However, Richter Ostrager did not release the group from responsibility as the cause of greenhouse gases. In the case, however, it was about the securities law. The trial, which included former Exxon leader and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, had been accompanied by climate protests.
