The Italian fashion group Dolce & Gabbana Argentina Argentine football idol Diego Maradona must pay because of the illegal use of his name 70,000 euros in damages. However, the former world champion had sued for a compensation of one million euros.
A Milan court also ruled that the luxury brand for the lawyer's fees of 13,000 euros has to pay, as Maradona's lawyer Ulisse Corea AFP news agency said on Wednesday.
Background is a fashion show three years ago. Dolce & Gabbana had sent a model wearing the jersey of Maradona's former club SSC Naples over the catwalk in 2016, with the name of Argentina's 1986 World Champion captain on her back.
The fashion house argued in court that the jersey was a homage to Naples and its urban history. For Judge Paola Gandolfi, however, outweighed the commercial nature of the show and the resulting violation of the naming rights of the South American.
When setting the company's penalty plus Maradona's attorney's fees, the court considered that no production of the presented Maradona jersey had been commissioned.
Maradona said via Twitter that homages are "fantastic," but "I think they should have asked for the necessary approval."
