Negotiating your salary: "I changed companies to get better pay"

2020-01-18T06:45:59.555Z

Tran Luu, 37, IT support technician, has just obtained a salary increase of 500 euros per month. Like his former employer

Tran Luu recognizes him without shame. “The level of my future salary was decisive when I had to choose my orientation after the bac. Now 37 years old, this IT technician, holder of a BTS, does not regret the choice he made at 20 years old. Parisian by origin, he studied between Bordeaux (Gironde) and Paris, never found himself unemployed and in a decade or so and experienced significant salary growth.

By choosing to change companies, at the end of 2019, he made a significant jump in terms of salary. "During my job interview in early December, the director of human resources offered me 2,600 euros net monthly, much more interesting than my previous salary," he says. My experience in IT support has paid off, I believe that I now have a decent salary for my age. The young man now earns almost 500 euros more each month for an unchanged weekly working time, that is to say 35 hours.

Originally, this computer enthusiast saw himself rather as a developer, that is to say in the design of applications and computer programs. “But when I started looking for work, from 2008, France was in the middle of a crisis and with the explosion of the Internet bubble, it was easier for me to turn to support ( Editor's note: computer hardware troubleshooting and maintenance ). Today, I would not see myself changing, I prefer to remain consistent. "

The "after blow"

After two years as an independent IT repairman, then as an interim computer specialist, Tran found in 2010 a company where he wanted to invest and where he was recruited for 1900 euros net monthly. “I have asked for an increase several times without obtaining it. One day, I even threatened to resign, which I ended up doing on a whim at the end of 2019, ”he recalls.

“In IT, the job market is very fluid. If you want to have a raise, do not hesitate to change employers. Many of my colleagues follow missions with each other. They always think about the next move and already know who they are going to work with after a CDD or a temporary contract, "describes Tran who will not hesitate to move again if his salary does not increase quickly.

"My current company wants me to work 39 hours a week and I will sign a framework contract. I have personal projects, I want to start a family. If I don't get the monthly increase I want, I'll think about leaving, ”he assumes.
