2020-01-20T14:22:06.643Z

This solar power plant, which will be in operation before the World Cup in 2022, will be able to supply 10% of the Qata's electric consumption

Total is interested in renewable energies. The French oil company has just signed an agreement for the development of the Al Kharsaah Solar PV IPP Project photovoltaic project, an 800-megawatt solar power plant located 80 km west of Doha, Qatar.

This 451 million euro project will be carried out by a consortium made up of Total (49%) and Marubeni (51%). It will supply around 10% of the country's peak electricity demand. In addition, it will also significantly reduce CO2 emissions by 26 million tonnes over the life of this project. A first phase of this plant will be in operation from 2021 before taking full power the following year, before the World Cup which will take place in this country.

"We are proud to lead the way"

This power plant will be built on land of over 1,000 hectares. Nearly two million double-sided solar modules will be mounted to capture the exceptional sunshine in this region.

“We are proud to lead the way by building the first large-scale solar power plant in Qatar and supporting a country determined to develop renewable energies. With our partners, we will use the best of our expertise and technical know-how in order to deliver a project that will be one of the most competitive in the world, "said Patrick Pouyanné, President and CEO of Total. whose ambition is to reach 15 to 20% of its electricity sales from low carbon energy by 2040.

Solar power projects are multiplying in this region. Saudi Arabia wants to build a structure of 200 gigawatts of capacity by 2030, via a solar mega-project built with the support of the conglomerate SoftBank Group. That of Sweihan, near the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi already produces 1,177 megawatts.
