The Central Bank of Syria clarified that the withdrawal of coins from the category 1 Syrian pounds issued in 1991 was in accordance with a decision issued by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers at the end of 2013 as a result of the presence of large quantities of them in circulation at that time, noting that the issuance of the lira for the years 1994 and 1996 are still in circulation.
With regard to what is being circulated on the social media pages from stopping trading in metal coins from category 1 Syrian pounds, the Central confirmed in a statement that Sana received a copy of it that metal coins were withdrawn from category 1 Syrian pounds for issuance in 1991 based on a proposal from the Monetary and Credit Board in 2013 with “ Maintaining the 1994 and 1996 issuance in circulation, while maintaining the legal force of release of the class 1 Syrian pounds coin, as the Syrian pound is the basic currency unit of the national currency.
The Central Council concluded its statement by stressing the necessity of not circulating any information about monetary policy and what related to its procedures except through its official website and its page on the social networking site Facebook, noting the need to implement legislative decree No. 4 for the current year that warned against the consequences of manipulating the exchange rate and promoting rumors and lies related to the national currency Punishment of promoters is stressed.
