The step that has just been taken brings the first nuclear power plant in an Arab country closer to its start-up. The United Arab Emirates announced on Monday that its nuclear safety authority (FANR) has approved the operating license for the first atomic reactor at the Barakah plant in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Neither the authorities nor the operator, the company Nawah, have communicated a date for the start-up of the power plant. In late January, a delegation from Wano, the world association of nuclear power plant operators, estimated Barakah's No. 1 reactor ready to produce its first kilowatt hours.

As is often the case for large-scale projects, which constitute a first, the Barakah site is almost three years behind schedule. The main manufacturer, the South Korean Kepco, had indeed announced a start-up in May 2017, recalls the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2019, by consultant Mycle Schneider.
