China overtakes US on patents

2020-04-07T17:54:42.273Z

International patent applications increased 5.2% last year. It remains to be seen what impact the coronavirus epidemic will have.

A whole symbol. China has become the main applicant for international patent applications in 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization (Ompi) said on Tuesday. The Middle Kingdom thus ended the reign of the United States (57,840 requests in 2019), which dominated the ranking each year since the creation of the Ompi patent cooperation treaty in 1978.

Japan, Germany, South Korea and France follow in the ranking. "In 1999, the Ompi received 276 requests from China, against 58,990 in 2019," said the organization's general director, Francis Gurry, in a press release. First known for its low-cost workforce, China has achieved a spectacular move upmarket. Like many Asian economies: Asian applicants now account for more than half of all applications, with Europe and North America each accounting for less than a quarter. This Chinese breakthrough can also be seen in the statistics of the main applicant companies.

For the third consecutive year, Huawei Technologies, with 4411 applications published, dominated the world ranking in 2019, according to the annual report of the Ompi. Next are Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (Japan), Samsung Electronics (South Korea), Qualcomm Inc. (United States) and Guang Dong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications (China). In Europe, Huawei was also the first applicant in 2019, according to the European Patent Office.

Globally, international patent applications increased by 5.2% (265,800 applications) last year. It remains to be seen what impact the coronavirus epidemic will have. Preliminary data received by the Ompi for January, February and March showed a slowdown in the growth of requests for
patents.
