The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned FAO that the Coved 19 pandemic will increase hunger and poverty in Latin America.

France Presse today quoted the organization as saying in its report that food security for the region has worsened in recent years and this new crisis may have a dangerous impact on some countries and regions.

The report, prepared at the request of Mexico, the rotating president of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States, pointed out that a number of countries in the region are already suffering from severe food insecurity due to economic and climatic factors, which are Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti.

According to the report published yesterday, the greatest danger in the short term lies in the occurrence of food shortages in the population who respect health safety measures to prevent the spread of the virus and who in many cases have lost their main source of income.

The UN called on the governments of these countries to declare food and agriculture strategic activities of national public interest.

In a statement, FAO Regional Representative Julio Berdigo said that it is necessary to maintain the permanence of the diet so that the health crisis does not turn into a food crisis and recommended strengthening food support programs for mothers of reproductive age and for children under the age of five in addition to ensuring school feeding and expanding social protection programs.

The number of people who have been confirmed by a laboratory with the emerging coronavirus in Latin America has exceeded 175,000, of whom more than 8,700 have died.
