The US economy lost 20.5 million jobs last April due to the pandemic of the emerging Corona virus, which represents the largest job drop since the Great Depression.
Reuters quoted the US Labor Department's monthly report released today as saying that the unemployment rate rose to 14.7 percent last month, which breaks the record level recorded after the World War II of 10.8 percent, which the rate touched in November 1982.
The report pointed to the devastation caused by the general isolation measures imposed by state and local governments in mid-March to curb the spread of Covid 19.
Economists had previously expected the number of jobs in the non-agricultural sectors in the United States to drop to 22 million, and March data were revised to show a loss of 871,000 jobs instead of 701,000 jobs in previous estimates.
Economists say that the US economy went into recession in late March, when the country almost completely underwent general isolation measures due to Covid 19.
