Total has just won a first round in the conflict between it and EDF. The Paris Commercial Court ruled in favor of the oil company on Wednesday, which wants to give up, due to the Covid-19 crisis, the nuclear electricity it had ordered from EDF.
The electricity market having been liberalized in France, alternative suppliers (Engie, Total, Eni ...) can buy in advance and at a fixed price (42 euros per MWh) a certain amount of nuclear electricity produced by EDF , as part of a mechanism called Arenh. The problem is that the health crisis has reduced the consumption of electricity in France by 15 to 20% and the alternative suppliers were left with a surplus of electricity, which they had to resell on the market. at a price much lower than the price at which they had bought it.
