The government, which has tripled the fund created at the end of April to encourage cycling, will also help communities to perpetuate the temporary cycle paths set up as part of the deconfinement, said Friday the Minister for Ecological Transition Elisabeth Borne.

"There are a thousand kilometers of temporary cycle paths that are deployed thanks to local authorities (...) I want to strongly encourage elected officials to continue the dynamic (...) the State will support communities so that they perpetuate these tracks, "said Borne during a press conference broadcast via Twitter.
The government has set up an ambitious "bicycle plan" intended to encourage cycling trips during the deconfinement phase started on May 11, in order to avoid a massive transfer of public transport to the car. These efforts are accompanied by the development in many cities of new cycle paths.
"A call for projects from the + Active Mobility Fund + (set up in 2018, editor's note) will be launched in June to help communities that need it to transform temporary tracks into permanent tracks," explained Ms. Borne.
In addition, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Friday that he would endow “an additional billion euros” with a fund (endowment to support local investment) to support “green” investments by municipalities.
"Obviously, cycle paths are part of these investments," insisted Elisabeth Borne, while judging too early to assess what amounts would be dedicated to it.
