It is a massive support plan which concerns between 12,000 and 14,000 municipalities. Prime Minister Édouard Philippe presented this Friday “a mechanism for offsetting tax and state revenues” for local authorities to the tune of “around 750 million euros”, to compensate for the losses caused by the Covid-19 crisis.
The head of government also indicated that he would provide "an additional billion euros" in funds to support the "green" investments of the municipalities, after a meeting with representatives of the associations of mayors in Matignon, the headquarters of the Prime Minister's services.
Thursday, the presidents of the regions had challenged Emmanuel Macron, calling him to "bet the territories" by initiating in particular an economic recovery plan "co-built with the regions", after the health crisis.
"We call on it to do it on the one hand by initiating a recovery and reconstruction plan co-constructed with the regions and on the other hand by setting a great decentralizing ambition for our country", wrote the elected officials in a published forum by Le Monde.
"We are ready to write with the State by the summer of a political agreement for this," continued the presidents of 19 regions and communities in mainland France and overseas. Elected officials recalled the mobilization of the regions since the start of the health crisis, in particular by committing "in two months more than 1.7 billion euros in exceptional spending", while their revenues collapsed.
