Resulting from a partnership between Carrefour and Cash Converters, the first Carrefour Occasion opened in Essonne. Cash payment for vendors

Khaki dress, Fila sneakers and pretty orange lipstick, Farah, originally from Ulis (Essonne) but living in Paris, came specially from the capital to sell her precious objects, from which she hopes to get 450 euros: Fendi glasses, a watch and luxury jewelry. Amro, the manager of this new Carrefour Occasion store, located just in front of the checkouts of the Carrefour des Ulis hypermarket, consults websites with her to check the prices of her items.

Negotiation begins, but we must avoid the pitfall of counterfeit glasses sold at low prices on the Web ... The two finally agree on a reliable site and this young bank adviser will leave with 350 euros in cash. "A reasonable price," she says.

Opened in early March, just before containment, this Carrefour Occasion, born of a partnership between Carrefour and one of the recognized experts in the sector, Cash Converters, reopened on June 26. In this brand new 100 m2 space, where the slogan "Nothing is thrown, everything is redeemed" is everywhere, the old Nokia 7230 at almost 20 euros rub shoulders with the latest iPhone 11 pro (64 GB) at 1050 euros, or about 30% cheaper than the new product marketed about two months ago.

"Consumers are gaining purchasing power"

Calvin Klein sunglasses at 70 euros spawn with CDs at 2 euros, old Nintendo DS at 40 euros, an Optoma video projector at 180 euros or even a Babymoov baby food processor at 55 euros. And it works: "Last weekend, this Carrefour Occasion arrived first in France for our stores of this size," said Ronan Pensec, Deputy Managing Director of Cash Converters.

Certainly, the fact that the Carrefour next to the store registers up to 5,000 checkouts on Saturday played a role. But not only: “Thanks to this concept, consumers gain purchasing power since we buy their goods from them when they are dropped off. And we are also responding to a new desire for sustainable consumption ”, decrypts Jean-Baptiste Prévoteau, the director of merchant services at Carrefour. These items are purchased in cash (or by bank transfer) up to 1000 euros. Beyond that, expertise is systematically requested.

Alain, retired from Defense (Hauts-de-Seine) who comes here every day, bought a book by Delphine de Vigan for 1.90 euros "while it costs 19 euros new", he breathes. Hamza, a student, bought a JBL headset for 30 euros, while Fatima, also a student, takes a look and will come back to sell the laptops that the family no longer wants. Jewels and bags, above all, are taken by storm. In the praise concert of the day, only Sophie, a teacher, finds the prices of video games "not interesting".

Store employees keep explaining how the system works. "Once the customer-sellers understand, 90% do not negotiate prices," says Amro. "Secure payment system, a guarantee provided by Carrefour, it also works because we reassure customers", underlines Ronan Pensec, who also points out the importance of surprise: "Once in a while, the stock n is never predictable. Ultimately, as in other Cash Converters, it is betting that each other's wishes will be recorded in a notebook by the sellers. “When a retro piece of jewelry arrives, the seller will know in advance who he can offer it to. A second similar store will soon open in Liévin (North) before, hopes Carrefour, a larger scale deployment.
