Latin America's largest airline, the Brazilian-Chilean group LATAM, will cut some 2,700 jobs, or a third of its workforce, to cope with the disastrous consequences of the coronavirus epidemic in air transport.

The company said it could not reach an agreement with the unions to reduce wages, and as a result, it decided to reduce its staff to maintain its activity.

LATAM will offer a voluntary departure plan until Tuesday, and then begin laying off staff if there are not enough applicants to leave, the group said.

At the end of May, LATAM declared bankruptcy in the United States and placed under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy law which allows a company no longer able to repay its debt to restructure itself safe from creditors.
