The online accommodation booking platform Booking.com announced on Tuesday that it would cut its workforce by up to a quarter due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, leading to thousands of layoffs.

The Amsterdam-based company, which employs some 17,500 people across the world, did not give the exact number of positions affected, saying details will be released " in the weeks and months to come ." She warned, however, that " up to 25% " of employees could be affected by this " extremely difficult " measure .
Restructuring
" The Covid-19 crisis has devastated the travel industry, and we continue to feel the impact with travel volumes which remain significantly reduced, " Booking.com said in a statement sent to AFP.
" While we have done a lot to save as many jobs as possible, we believe we need to restructure our organization to match our expectations for the future (of the travel industry) ," the company added. .
It follows in the footsteps of other online platforms such as Airbnb and TripAdvisor, which have also announced the layoff of around 25% of their workforce. Founded in 1996, Booking.com offers some 28 million listings on its site, which is available in 43 languages.
