The head of state accuses the application, without proof, of spying on its American users on behalf of Beijing, in a context of trade and political tensions with China.

He accepted on Monday the possibility of an American group buying TikTok, but before September 15, under penalty of banning the platform. Microsoft is in negotiations with ByteDance to negotiate a forced acquisition. The ban also targets the WeChat platform, which belongs to the giant Tencent.

" Like TikTok, WeChat automatically captures large swathes of information about its users, thus threatening to give the Chinese Communist Party access to personal information about Americans ", justifies the decree. The US Senate also unanimously passed a bill Thursday that bans downloading and using TikTok on any device issued by the government to its employees or members of Congress.

" TikTok represents a major security risk and has no place on government devices ," tweeted the press service of Republican Senator Josh Hawley, co-author of the text. After its passage in the Senate, controlled by the Republicans, this text will still have to be approved by the House of Representatives, with a Democratic majority, so that Donald Trump can then promulgate it.
