Actions are increasing to help Beirut. Four days after the double explosion that devastated part of the Lebanese capital, several tens of thousands of inhabitants remain without solution. To help them, Washington yesterday sent $ 15 million worth of food and medicine. In France, several appeals for donations have been launched and several exceptional aid will be released. Today, it is the Carrefour group which “ fully associates itself with the pain of the Lebanese people ” and sends the equivalent of 52 pallets of non-perishable foodstuffs (pasta, rice, canned food, flour, etc.).

It is " thanks to the support of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the provision of a plane by the Ministry of the Armed Forces ", notes Carrefour in a press release, that the group can send these forty tonnes of food. There, they will be received by a partner of the supermarket giant, which will distribute the products with the help of several local NGOs. In Lebanon, Carrefour operates five stores.
The port explosion is also a food disaster in Beirut. For good reason, 60% of imports usually pass through this port, which is the largest in the country, and its explosion calls into question the food security of the capital, or even the country. For example, wheat normally constitutes 80% of agricultural imports from Lebanon and passes through this port. This will obviously no longer be possible before reconstruction. In addition, at the time of the explosion, 120,000 tons of grain were blown away. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Agency has already expressed its fears for the country's food security.
