The Arab Center for Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) announced that the durum wheat variety (ACSAD 1431) and the barley variety (ACSAD 1704) have been approved in Algeria.
Director General of the Center, Dr. Nasr El-Din El-Obeid, explained in a statement to SANA that the scientific cooperation between the center and the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development resulted in the development of new high-yielding varieties of wheat and barley that contribute to enhancing grain production in Algeria, the most important of which is durum wheat (ACSAD 1431) and barley variety (ACSAD 1704). ).
El-Obeid pointed out that the two types were reached after a long series of field experiments in Algerian agricultural research stations and in farmers' fields, which were carried out by ACSAD experts and researchers specialized in the field of grain breeding and the development of new varieties suitable for the environments of dry areas in coordination and cooperation with Algerian researchers.
According to El-Obeid, the new variety of wheat is characterized by an average yield of 3.8 tons / hectare in addition to its good quality of grain and its ability to withstand diseases, especially yellow and brown rust disease, and its characteristic as early maturity. 3.7 tons / hectare and is characterized by its tolerance to the disease of mesh spot and its tolerance to cold and drought, as it can be cultivated in the regions of the high plateaus in Algeria.
It is noteworthy that ACSAD developed many varieties that played a major role in increasing Arab agricultural production and improved its quality, and continues to provide Arab countries annually with seeds of the best varieties developed for it in order to study, test and approve the best of them, which supports Arab capabilities in the production of grains.
