Robert W. Gore revolutionized the outdoor clothing market.
In 1976 the American presented his invention: a waterproof and breathable fabric that was to change his life.
Gore-Tex is not only used in sportswear, shoes or rain jackets, but can also be found in spacesuits and guitar strings, for example.
Gore was born in the US state of Utah, he was the oldest of five children.
The parents Bill and Vieve Gore as well as an uncle founded the company "WL Gore & Associates" in 1958.
Gore became CEO and made it a billion dollar company, the BBC reports.
In 2000 he resigned as president of the company.
He had received numerous awards for his work.
Gore died in Maryland on Thursday after a long illness.
