It was mid-March when Johannes Reck, 35, only saw curves on his monitor that pointed steeply downwards.

The business of his start-up GetYourGuide didn't decline, it dissolved.

GetYourGuide is particularly popular with younger travelers as an experience broker.

Many look to the platform for spectacular tours at their holiday destination - to make those who stayed at home jealous with the photos via Instagram & Co.

The Berliners earn a commission from it.

According to the company, your business has grown enormously, by 80 percent last year to several hundred million euros.

"In mid-March our sales were at zero, really zero," said Reck.

"When I woke up, I wondered if this could be real; I felt like I was in a parallel matrix."

They had just moved to a larger domicile, a visible sign of their success.

They had a couple of rooms set up by stage designers in the style of popular travel destinations.

A Scottish club, with heavy green armchairs and shelves full of whiskey bottles.

A "Museum of Modern Art" in which balls of colorful stuffed animals dangle from the ceiling.

Everything seemed so easy, every destination - tourist and economic - attainable.
