When the economist Dorothea Kübler was appointed professor 16 years ago, she often felt "like an outsider".
She was the only woman in the college of TU Berlin.
And when she came to committee meetings, she read the question on the faces of the participants: "What is the secretary doing here?"
A female chancellor has ruled the republic for 15 years, but researching the economy is still considered a man's business in this country.
Only gradually does the scene realize that this could be a problem.
This week, the state's economists will meet for the annual congress of the Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS) in Cologne.
The main topic is the importance of the gender issue in economics.
At the same time, the organizers are presenting figures for the first time on how poorly women are represented in economics.
In some areas, the gender disparity is "even greater than we feared," says the Frankfurt professor and VfS chairman Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln.
