From our special correspondent
After 10 years of work, the two turbines buried in the bowels of the mountain began to roar.
EDF CEO Jean-Bernard Levy inaugurated his new Romanche-Gavet dam in Isère on Friday October 9 with great fanfare.
A 10 km underground pipeline leading to an underground hydroelectric plant now replaces five old dams and six hydroelectric plants bordering the Romanche River, some of them 100 years old.
The new structure represents an investment of 400 million euros.
It will be able to produce 40% more energy than its predecessors, or 560 gigawatts per hour, enough to supply the cities of Grenoble and Chambéry with electricity.
Beyond the engineering feat achieved in this alpine valley, the event aimed to place the spotlight on EDF's hydroelectric activity.
The group, via the French state, is playing a close game against the European Commission.
