By retrofitting air conditioning systems in public buildings, the federal government wants to reduce the risk of infection. Federal states and municipalities are to receive a total of 500 million euros in support.

Ventilating indoor spaces regularly can help reduce the risk of contracting the coronavirus.

However, the measure has met with criticism.

In winter, people in public buildings could freeze and catch cold.

So that they do not have to work with blankets and scarfs in the future, the federal government is providing 500 million euros for the professional retrofitting of ventilation and climate protection systems in public buildings.

The coronavirus "is there and will stay for the next few months", said Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU).

The federal government therefore wants to help states and municipalities to lower the risk of infection in authorities, public event halls and similar buildings through technical retrofitting.

With the money from the funding pot, federal states and municipalities could cover part of the costs for installing special virus filters in existing systems, said the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa) in Berlin on Monday.

Bafa will process the applications from Tuesday.

The federal government is funding retrofitting with up to 40 percent of the costs or a maximum of 100,000 euros per system.

The program is also intended for universities.

Applications can be submitted until December 31, 2021.
