Something must change

Donors' concerns about whether the money is in the right hands are justified.

Even if it happens in good faith, almost half a billion shekels disappear a year.

The prevailing perception among the public is that the corona crisis has led to the locking of the wallet and the avoidance of expenses.

Surprisingly, the period that does not stop hitting us provides unexpected findings here as well.

The data from "Israel Donates" show that in recent months there has been an 83% increase in online donations throughout the country.

In the past year there has been an 18% increase in the number of donations, but the really big jump occurred in the months of the Corona period.

During this period there was an increase of 200% on donations made by foreign residents increased by no less than 300% by donations from Israelis. Apparently the public sees their activities during the crisis and realize how important they continue to exist.

The unfortunate fact is that despite the best intentions of Many, the tremendous potential is far from being fully realized. More than once I have heard the donors' concerns, is there anyone who oversees that the funds get into the right hands and whether these do reach their destination. To any association without knowing exactly where the donation goes, or at least what percentage of each donation actually reaches its destination. Whether it is for the salaries of junior and senior employees, for various commissions and for various operating and maintenance expenses.

You can make money get into the right hands

Oren Dobronsky

On a deeper look, the 15 largest non-profit organizations in Israel spend, or perhaps it is more correct to say, "spend," one way or another, almost half a billion shekels, every year, on the mechanism itself.

The accounting books state "salary and related expenses", or "additional administrative and general expenses".

The name given to these sums is "funds that could have saved and helped thousands of other families in Israel."

Clearly most, if not all, of the money had to go somewhere else.

Apart from the 15 large associations we mentioned, there are over 37,000 associations in Israel today and one can only guess how much money does not reach its destination.

Another problem is that each organization chooses for itself the donors, the needy audience to which the money goes, and in most cases without any transparency towards the donor.

An association can legally prefer a particular sector or community, an act that is not necessarily consistent with the will and intent of the donor.

The conclusion is clear.

Especially in this time of crisis, the charity system in Israel and the system of associations in particular, need a facelift.

The system, which is mostly outdated and cumbersome, does not take advantage of the advanced technology that has existed and has been implemented for many years in the private sector, and as a result the lack of transparency and unnecessary waste dominates.

History has shown that times of crisis, like the present, can produce positive results.

Especially in the days of the corona, the days of uncertainty, we must recalculate a trajectory.

The third sector and the various associations must connect with the business sector and the high-tech industry, cooperate, mobilize and promote the entire system to the 21st century.

We must harness the technology and the best minds that sit here in Israel, so that the donations get into the right hands.

Streamlining and correcting the donation systems in Israel will make the Israeli public much more rewarded.
