Two and a half years after the presentation by Alexandre Bompard of his transformation plan for Carrefour, the distributor achieved, in the third quarter, its best sales for 20 years.

Group sales rose 8.4% on a comparable basis, unheard of since the distributor published these statistics.

The transformation carried out over the past two years has enabled Carrefour to take full advantage of the additional purchases made by households during this pandemic period, when a growing number of customers eat at home.

We have reached a new milestone in our strategic plan.

We are now in a phase of commercial acceleration

, welcomes Alexandre Bompard, CEO of the group.

This quarter is the confirmation that Carrefour has structurally returned to growth, beyond the specificities of each food market, which is buoyant in some places and less in others

”.

Carrefour's growth is first driven by Brazil (+ 26%) and Spain (+ 6.3%), “

two engines that are running at full speed,

” notes the CEO.

In the latter country, sales were declining a year and a half ago, before Raimi Baitieh, the brand new boss of Carrefour France, was appointed there and instilled his obsession with customer satisfaction.

The Baitieh effect is also starting to be felt in France, where he was appointed in July to boost a new commercial dynamic.

In France for the first time in a long time, our growth has increased significantly in all our formats, our NPS has increased by 7 points and we have stabilized our market share since September,

 ” says Alexandre Bompard.

In Italy, on the other hand, sales fell by 8%, penalized by Carrefour's exposure to tourist areas in the north of the country.

More competitive prices

The sales of French hypermarkets, which hitherto weighed down those of the group in France, have become positive again (+ 2.5%) after having been mechanically weighed down by the reductions in surface areas made over the past two years.

"

We are seeing very strong momentum in hypermarkets thanks to the deployment of the 5/5/5 method

", which makes customer satisfaction the main objective of employees.

They also benefit from the investments made by Carrefour to improve its price positioning, a criterion more than ever scrutinized by customers.

We see it in all our markets and not just in France

,” explains Alexandre Bompard.

This is the reason why we are deploying savings plans at a very rapid rate, which will be reinvested in prices

”.

Carrefour revised its savings plan upwards this summer to 3 billion euros by 2022.

While the threat of re-containment looms, the distributor says it is ready to face it.

The health crisis is here.

My daily priority is to ensure the safety of customers and employees, and to manage the company in a reactive way, to adapt to the demands of our customers,

explains the CEO.

Since March, we have been working continuously on several scenarios, and in particular extended the capacities of our e-commerce offer

”.
