Never before have so many people started training in nursing as now.

Around 71,300 people decided to do an apprenticeship in a nursing profession in 2019, reports the Federal Statistical Office.

This corresponds to an increase of 8.2 percent compared to the previous year - and in a ten-year comparison even an increase of 39 percent.

At the same time, the proportion of men has increased significantly over the past ten years.

While in 2009 only just under one in five trainees (19 percent) was a man, the proportion rose to 25 percent in 2019.

The strongest growth among the nursing professions was in care for the elderly.

Within ten years, the number of apprentices rose from 19,400 to 27,300.

This corresponds to an increase of 41 percent.

With 26,600 newcomers in 2019, the health and nursing sector was also able to attract around 5200 more trainees than ten years earlier.

For the evaluation, trainees in geriatric care, health care and nursing as well as health and child care - which have not existed since the beginning of the year, were recorded.

In January 2020, the generalist training nurse was introduced with the aim of enabling trainees to care for people of all ages in all care areas.

Official figures are currently not available.

After completing nursing training, employees can expect an average gross earnings of EUR 3502 per month.

This is how much a full-time specialist in health and nursing earned in 2019. The gross monthly earnings of trained geriatric nurses averaged EUR 3,116.

Around 60 percent of the nurses and 57 percent more than half of the geriatric nurses worked in shifts in 2019.

Even more were on duty at the weekend: 74 percent of the nurses and 79 percent of the geriatric nurses worked regularly on Saturdays and Sundays in 2019.
