No cashiers: In a test shop of the Tegut supermarket chain in East Hesse, customers pay with an app or card without going to a till. Ten more stores are planned, the concept is similar to that of Amazon Go.

The supermarket chain Tegut wants to win additional customers with a new digital store concept without a cashier.

As the company from Fulda announced on Thursday, a digital test shop was opened in the East Hessian city in which customers can scan their items and pay by app, credit or giro card without going to a cash register.

"With these completely new shops, we are responding to people's changed consumption, living and working habits and their needs," explained Tegut's logistics division manager, Sören Gatzweiler.

"Stationary answer to online shopping"

The test shop with the name "tegut ... teo" with a size of 50 square meters offers around 950 everyday products, it was said.

The concept enables an opening practically around the clock and thus more flexibility for consumers who can do their shopping if it suits their daily routine.

This means that the concept is "the stationary answer to online shopping".

This year and next, Tegut wants to open a total of ten such small shops in locations where classic supermarkets are too big, including in new construction areas, in front of public facilities such as clinics and universities, at transport hubs and on company premises.

A company spokeswoman said the new concept should not be transferred to the chain's existing grocery stores.

No personnel savings are associated with this either.

In order to record the purchases made by customers, "tegut ... teo" also uses cameras and 3D sensors that record motion sequences.

Concept similar to Amazon Go

The online retailer Amazon operates according to a similar concept in the USA under the name Amazon Go.

In them, customers simply take items off the shelf and leave the store.

Cameras and other sensors such as scales in the shelves register who has taken which goods.

The price will be debited retrospectively.

In Germany, for example, the East Frisian trading house Bünting, according to reports in the "Lebensmittelzeitung" newspaper, launched the new "Combi City" concept in Oldenburg this summer, which also includes a vending machine.

Tegut operates more than 270 stores in Hesse, Thuringia, Bavaria as well as in Göttingen in Lower Saxony, in Mainz, Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg (Baden-Württemberg).

Last year, the company, which belongs to the Swiss Migros Cooperative, generated net sales of EUR 1.069 billion (previous year: EUR 1.035 billion).

A total of around 7200 people work in the stores, in two logistics centers and in central services in Fulda for the food retailer.
