Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian sparked outrage in Canberra on Monday by posting a photo montage in which a man, dressed as an Australian soldier, holds a bloody knife against the throat of an afghan child.

The case comes days after the publication of a report on war crimes allegedly committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016.

Twitter claimed to have flagged the tweet as "

sensitive

" before adding that comments on topical political issues or "

threatening foreign policy statements

" from official government accounts do not generally violate its rules. .

On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the tweet "

disgusting

".

He called on Twitter to take it down and China to apologize.

Some countries have also expressed concern following this tweet.

For his part, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Canberra accused Australia of doing too much about the incident.
