Christmas is coming to the White House - for the fourth and, for the time being, last time with the Trump family.
Philipp Löwe, DER SPIEGEL:
"The First Lady's Christmas Taskforce went to great lengths to decorate 106 wreaths and 62 trees, to distribute more than 360 meters of garlands and 3,200 lights. That certainly took weeks and cost several 10,000 dollars . "
More than 120 helpers are said to have decorated the rooms.
In an official video, the White House presents itself as a winter wonderland - including an astonished first lady.
Philipp Löwe, DER SPIEGEL:
"The 2020 Christmas decoration theme is America The Beautiful. This is the title of a patriotic hymn by Katherine Lee Bates. That was a teacher and poet. It's the first interesting detail for me. Lee Bates was a longtime Republican but turned In 1924, quasi quit the party, publicly declared that it wanted to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate John Davis, simply because her party was against the United States being part of the League of Nations. "
The colors red, white and blue dominate - typically American.
As in previous years, the decoration can be described as overloaded.
But no comparison to 2019: because of the white lights, you could hardly see the fir tree.
Philipp Löwe, DER SPIEGEL:
"In the library of the White House, also interesting, the women's suffrage, which was introduced 100 years ago, is celebrated. In the spirit of the understanding of women Donald Trump. It then goes on to the East Room. There are small cars, toys, trains and hanging there Airplanes in the Christmas trees. This is supposed to represent and celebrate the USA as a technically superior country. There is also a small Airforce One hanging in the Christmas tree. "
The official Christmas tree is a five and a half meter high Fraser fir. So basically the 'Fraser Force One', it's in the Blue Room. I find it more exciting, but it will be in the Red Room. Particularly important professions are celebrated there during the corona crisis, i.e. the police, garbage disposal, medical staff. But - and this is again an interesting detail - the US Postal Service, the American Post, which Trump recently trimmed rather badly and actually only ridiculed and reviled during the election.
And so this Christmas decoration is actually like his entire reign for me. It's pretty much, it's pretty loud, and pretty much doesn't make sense. "
