Collien Ulmen-Fernandes on money and wealth: "I was a bit narrow-minded even as a child"

2020-12-02T12:31:43.694Z

At the age of twelve, she signed her first home loan and savings contract, followed by her first own property a little later. Collien Ulmen-Fernandes has long since taken care of things - nevertheless she often doesn't dare to afford things.

SPIEGEL:

Ms. Ulmen-Fernandes, your husband Christian Ulmen told us that he got married richly.

Ulmen-Fernandes:

That's right.

Ulmen-Fernandes:

That's also true.

However, I often get angry with myself because I don't dare to afford things that I would like to have.

I envy my husband the ease with which he throws his money out.

When we stay in the hotel, it always has to have the largest suite, even if we can't be in that many rooms.

I, on the other hand, tend to take the smallest room.

SPIEGEL:

Is that still thrift or is it already stinginess in view of your probably quite good income?

Ulmen-Fernandes:

I do not consider myself stingy.

I am generous to others.

I only skimp when it comes to me.

Blame it on my Swabian origins.

Or my Indian one.

SPIEGEL:

As a child, you were often in India, where your father is from.

Two thirds of the population live there in poverty.

Has that shaped you?
