At the beginning of September Herbert Diess managed a coup at Braunschweig Airport.

The VW boss received Tesla boss Elon Musk for a joint test drive with Volkswagen's electric car ID.3.

The world market leader from Wolfsburg, according to the message, was on course, Diess on a par with the electronics pioneer from Silicon Valley.

Three months later, on Tuesday evening, there was no longer any sign of optimism in the same place.

At 6 p.m., the VW supervisory board met for a meeting called at short notice.

Diess was only a guest, in between he was asked into a conference room.

VW, a recently celebrated electric pioneer, has slipped into a leadership crisis.

For about two weeks, the boss has been causing the entire company to be in an uproar.

He demands more power in order to be able to rebuild the automaker according to his conditions.

To this end, Diess wants to re-appoint the board of directors according to his taste and to trim the group even more towards efficiency.

The sale of individual brands no longer seems sacrosanct either.

Above all, Diess is calling for his contract to be extended early, although the current one will run until April 2023.
