Due to the effects of the corona pandemic, Lufthansa is leaving many jets on the ground and massively cutting jobs.

By the end of the year, 29,000 jobs will have been lost, a company spokeswoman confirmed on Sunday in a report by "Bild am Sonntag".

Accordingly, more than 20,000 jobs will be cut abroad.

In addition, the airline sold the European business of the catering subsidiary LSG with 7,500 employees.

That left 109,000 employees.

Another 10,000 jobs are to be cut in Germany next year.

Meanwhile, the demand for flights over Christmas and New Year's Eve is increasing at Lufthansa, said the spokeswoman.

Bookings for the Canary Islands Tenerife and Fuerteventura have tripled, flight tickets to Cape Town in South Africa and Cancun in Mexico are even four times as often in demand.

Like other airlines, the Lufthansa Group came under massive pressure in the corona crisis due to the greatly reduced range of flights.

After three quarters, the company rescued by the state has already posted a loss of 5.6 billion euros in the current year.

Berlin had to intervene with billions in aid.

The job cuts should preferably take place part-time and voluntary departures, but redundancies for operational reasons are not excluded.

In addition, employees have to make savings contributions and, for example, forego some of their income.
