The Alternative Poverty Report for 2020 was published today (Wednesday) and raises a number of worrying findings.

The outbreak of the corona plague and the economic crisis led to the expansion of economic distress and a jump in poverty rates in Israel in 2020.

422,000 households were in economic distress (+ 14.5% +) *;

268,000 families degenerated into poverty (+ 9.2%) *;

143,000 families were added to those living in food insecurity (4.8% +) *;

The middle class shrank by a sixth (15.5%);

Only a quarter (23%) of households are in good economic condition;

Half (50.7%) of the population was economically affected as a result of the crisis;

A quarter (24%) of the public needed assistance and did not receive it.

President Reuven (Ruby) Rivlin:

"The Alternative Poverty Report for 2020, is a difficult, painful report, one of the most difficult I have read and faced. The report shows how the Corona crisis has turned from a health crisis to a broad and deep economic and social crisis.

Along with the real damage to the middle class, it turns out that the most vulnerable populations are suffering the most severely during the current crisis.

Unlike other reports, the Let organization report reflects the human aspect of poverty, and gives a platform to the people themselves. In the Let organization report, we know that behind every number, name, person, father, mother, boy, girl, discharged soldier , A young student, who are without financial backing, without support, in constant fear, some are hungry.

The report reveals, in a simple and clear way, the crisis of trust and internal crisis we are experiencing these days among ourselves, at the social and national level. To thousands of citizens every day. "

Jill Darmon, founder and president of Let:

"The jump in poverty rates confirms the most pessimistic economic forecasts of the beginning of the crisis, and highlights the weaknesses of the ecosystem in Israel. The corona has upset the delicate economic balance and pushed tens of thousands of new families into economic distress and poverty, but the country is It actually created the conditions for this fragility by refusing to invest significantly in those families in the past to build social resilience. The likelihood of a COVID-19 vaccine in the coming year allows us to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But once the restrictions are over and growth resumes, long and slow work will begin. In rebuilding our badly damaged social fabric, it is also a historic opportunity to correct a structural failure in Israeli society, and to repair the gaps that have been perpetuated in it over the years. Divided and unequal, I am not sure that the State of Israel has a real future. "

Eran Weintraub, CEO of Let

: “The corona has erupted as a health epidemic, but has developed into an unprecedented socio-economic epidemic.

We are in the worst economic crisis in the history of the country, which will take Israeli society years to recover from.

The bleeding among the poor populations must be stopped, and the deterioration of hundreds of thousands of Israelis must be stopped from a state of temporary crisis following the loss of employment to a life of poverty, from which it is difficult to impossible to recover.

If the government is not wise enough to invest tens of billions of the most vulnerable populations, the collapse would be inevitable and we can expect a collapse of social resilience, and for many years of deep recession and differences irreconcilable. "

Gilad Tanay, founder and chairman of the Institute ERI:

" The study year is done in the midst of one of the economic crises The big ones we knew. Therefore, we broadened our view beyond poverty this year, to attack the true dimensions of economic hardship, its characteristics and depth. The big concern is that economic hardship caused by a temporary crisis, if left untreated, will degenerate families into poverty and later into chronic poverty. "Prior to the crisis, they were in a reasonable and even good economic situation. The importance of the study is that it characterizes the families who are in distress and at risk of further deterioration, thus helping to focus aid efforts and make them more effective."
