Deutsche Wohnen boss Michael Zahn: "Then we will have to reclaim the rent"

Michael Zahn is at the helm of the DAX company Deutsche Wohnen. Here he talks about the allegation of profiteering - and about his anger with the Berlin rent cap.

Zahn, 57, has been CEO of the Deutsche Wohnen Group since October 2007.

In June, the company rose to the Dax as a replacement for the crisis-ridden Lufthansa.

The profit prospects are stable, but the dispute with Berlin politicians and an expropriation initiative has remained.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Zahn, the pandemic has put the world in a state of emergency - only on the real estate markets are prices rising as if nothing had happened.

How come

Zahn:

Interest rates are close to the all-time low.

And when we see how much money the central banks are pumping into the markets, it will probably stay that way for longer.

In addition, people are looking for safe investments in times of crisis.

For many, these are real estate.

SPIEGEL:

At the same time, many employees fear for their jobs, entrepreneurs for their existence.

Wouldn't that have to depress prices because hardly anyone buys an apartment in such a situation?

Zahn:

The long-term economic consequences of the corona crisis will only become apparent in the next two years.

I wonder with what certainty some experts predict a fall in house prices.

After all, the framework conditions remain the same: the influx of people into cities continues worldwide.

The supply remains scarce because the companies cannot keep up with the new building.
