There has been a CO₂ price in Germany since the beginning of the year. But the development has only limited impact on fuel prices at filling stations.

Petrol and diesel were about six cents more expensive at filling stations in Germany at the beginning of the year.

The ADAC announced.

For Super E 10, the price observers of the automobile club determined a German average price of 1.334 euros (January 3rd) per liter, on December 31st the gasoline cost an average of 1.275 cents.

Diesel rose in price over the same period on average from 1.164 cents to 1.227 cents per liter.

In order to make fossil fuels more expensive and to promote climate-friendly alternatives, there has been a CO₂ price for transport and heating in Germany since the beginning of the year.

For each metric ton of CO₂ produced by burning diesel and gasoline, heating oil and natural gas, an initial charge of EUR 25 will be charged, and the price will rise gradually to EUR 55 by 2025.

At the same time, VAT has been raised again from 16 percent to the old rate of 19 percent.

Both measures together put a burden on the fuel price, according to the Mineralölwirtschaftsverband, between 10 and 11 cents per liter.

At the beginning of the year, the industry association determined a price increase similar to that of the ADAC.

The average diesel price has risen by 7 cents to 1.21 euros per liter, and petrol of the Super E10 type has also increased by 7 cents per liter at 1.32 euros.

"This means that the petrol station companies have not passed the cost increases on to drivers in full due to tough competition," said a spokesman for the association.

The federal government has promised to return all of the income from the CO₂ tax to the citizens.

For employees with a long commute to work, the commuter allowance is increased, specifically from 30 to 35 cents from the 21st kilometer.

A so-called mobility bonus will be introduced for low-wage earners, which will only be given to those who submit a tax return.

In addition, a CO₂ surcharge is granted for housing benefits, which is an average of 15 euros per month, plus an average of 3.60 euros for each additional person in the household.
