"It's urgent !" France is desperately looking for home help

2021-01-05T10:50:05.610Z

A long neglected profession, it has shown all its social usefulness since the Covid-19 crisis. The needs are immense.

“We are participating in a major recruitment campaign with Pôle emploi.

It's urgent!

»Hélène Lemasson-Godin, director of social relations and HR of the National Union of Home Help, Care and Services (UNA), one of the four major federations of home help associations, does not don't mince words.

“The dependent and disabled elderly need us,” she continues.

Home help therefore has a future.

The current and urgent demand from the non-profit sector is estimated at 20,000 people and the overall employment offer in France in this area at at least 60,000 jobs ...

In 2050, the French population will reach 70 million people, of whom nearly three million will be dependent, a logical consequence of the aging of the population.

This is to say if we will need more and more helpers (there are already 225,000 in France), an alternative to placement in nursing homes.

One in two French people have a dependent person in their entourage, and 83% of the elderly want to stay at home.

Three ways coexist to find a home help job: the associative sector, private companies and employment by mutual agreement between individuals.

A human commitment

“The four flagship professions are home care workers, social workers, nursing assistants and nurses, without forgetting, of course, management professions,” explains Hélène Lemasson-Godin.

Being an employee with us, which brings together 600 associations and 80,000 employees, allows you to benefit from continuous training.

We invest a lot to develop our employees in their careers, in particular through professionalization courses and the validation of acquired experience, VAE.

"

Hélène Lemasson-Godin insists on the commitment of staff: “They are at the heart of people and know why they get up in the morning.

What greater social utility than maintaining the capacities of the elderly by stimulating them on a daily basis through games, manual activities, walks, readings?

What greater humanity than to help with essential acts such as washing, dressing, eating, than to heal and relieve?

What greater happiness than to bring back a smile to a person who is often totally alone and isolated, who sees only his home help or caregiver during the day?

"

There is a range of training options for working in the sector and many jobs are accessible with a state diploma.

“There are positions to be filled everywhere in France, almost all on permanent contracts, in both urban and rural areas.

More than 90% of employees are women and men are also expected!

“To date, the salary range goes from the minimum wage to 1,683 euros for home agents, from 1,600 euros at the start of their career to 2,200 at the end of their career for social workers and nursing assistants and for nurses, from 2000 to 2700 euros.

But we are fighting for a strong increase in remuneration.

», Adds Hélène Lemasson-Godin.

"I am their sandman"

Before 30, Bruno was a hairdresser, worked in the restaurant business and dabbled in several odd jobs.

And then it was the revelation: "Fifteen years ago, I became a home agent, then I validated my skills to obtain a life support diploma and, finally, I became a caregiver ..."

Nice journey for this man full of humanity who works at night, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., to reach the homes of six patients in the suburbs of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine).

"One has multiple sclerosis, the second is quadriplegic, the third is cerebral palsy," Bruno says simply.

They are in wheelchairs, I help them to lie down, to wash themselves, they are all equipped with medical beds, I follow them and I know them well.

At the moment, they are very anxious by the Covid-19, so we discuss, the night is very anxiety-provoking for them.

I am their confidant and their sandman!

"

Bruno earns 1,500 euros net per month and lives with great happiness what many would take for a priesthood.

“To be useful, what could be more beautiful?

»He sums up.
