Apple: So the company wants to bring more blacks into the technology industry

2021-01-13T17:47:22.366Z

The tech industry is still dominated by whites. Last summer Apple promised $ 100 million to change that. Now the first actions follow.

Since the latest wave of Black Lives Matter protests at the latest, many people have been aware of the extent to which many African Americans and other minorities are discriminated against in the USA.

Promises, good intentions and donations against racism followed.

One of the biggest commitments came from Apple.

Now the US company has announced new details on its anti-racism plans.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced a $ 100 million initiative in June with a focus on education, economic equality and reform of the American criminal justice system.

So far, however, these projects have remained rather vague.

On Wednesday, Apple announced where the first money should go.

Two training centers in Detroit and Atlanta are being funded to help people of color find their way into the technology industry.

In both cases, the group works with local universities and aims to target people from socially disadvantaged areas.

In addition to the university centers, scholarships, mentoring programs and internships are also planned.

Cook told CBS television: "There is systematic racism and it won't go away if you don't do something about it." The tech industry has been criticized for years for the fact that the proportion of white men in companies is above average.

One of the reasons for this is that they are disproportionately represented among university graduates in technical subjects.

In addition to the educational projects, Apple announced multi-million dollar support for black founders and a venture capital fund.

This is intended to support small companies run by People of Color in the corona crisis.

Apple isn't the only company that has been focusing more on gender equality and anti-racism since last summer.

For example, lemonade maker Pepsi has promised to invest $ 400 million over the next five years to support black communities and increase diversity within its own company.

PayPal wants to invest $ 530 million in black-run companies and revise the structures in their own group.

More and more companies are taking part in the so-called "15 percent pledge" - a campaign in which companies undertake to fill at least 15 percent of their store shelves with products from black manufacturers.

One of the founders of the social media platform Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, even resigned from his chief position and asked the company to replace him with a black person - which it did.

Amazon, IBM and Microsoft also announced in the summer that they would no longer make their facial recognition software available to the police for the time being.
